Art

LUV is an Awesome ThingAuthor: Dick Oxley

This small, but artistic book, combined the paintings of the late Richard Oxley with poetry from a national contest. The book is remarkable for its color and celebrates Oxley’s art. Since the artist’s death, the book has become a collector’s item. Williams Publishing Service conducted the national poetry contest, edited the book, selected the paintings, supervised the photography, and ordered the color separations and printing.

Pan Am Poster Book and Poster SeriesAuthor: Don Thomas

The author of this series had a keen personal interest in the history of civil aviation. He collected airline memorabilia and, in particular, beautiful travel posters. These posters were bought, sold, and traded at specialty shows and the private gatherings of enthusiastic groups of collectors. By including reproductions of his collected posters in these books, value was added to them. By selling the books at specialty shows and private gatherings, the author was able to turn a profit as well as having a lot of fun. He eventually published five collections of travel posters organized along special themes. This is a good example of an author/publisher that had his own marketing channel and made good use of it. Williams Publishing Services handled the photographic reproduction of the books (and some poster reprints) through layout and design, color separations, and printing.

Nature

“Florida’s Fabulous” Nature SeriesAuthor: Various

The unique style of this series of books was conceived and developed solely by Williams Publishing Services. Beginning in the late 1980s with the invention of the laser scanner and superior photographic film, a much higher level of color reproduction became available. “Florida’s Fabulous” nature series currently consists of 15 titles covering the most popular nature topics in the Sunshine State. Hard-core scientific information was often obtained from university professors and scientists and then re-written to make it easily accessible to all. WPS was responsible for all facets of making these best-selling regional books.

The World’s Most Spectacular Reptiles and AmphibiansAuthor: Bill Lamar

This book and the following title, Seashells, were both winners of the National Association of Independent Publishers award for Best Coffeetable Book in the separate years they were published. To make these books, Williams Publishing Services hired the authors and photographers, selected the species to be included, edited and revised the texts, created the layout and design, as well as the color separations, photo enhancement, and printing.

The World’s Most Beautiful SeashellsAuthor: Hill/Carmichael

(See previous text) To make this book, Williams Publishing Services hired the authors and photographers, selected the species to be included, edited and revised the texts, created the layout and design, as well as the color separations, photo enhancement, and printing. The most perfect seashell specimens are taken alive from the sea. The dead shells found on beaches are usually badly worn by wave action and abrasion from the sand. This book celebrates the most beautiful shells from around the world. We believe it is the most beautiful seashell book ever published.

The “Illustrated” Nature SeriesAuthor: Various

This series was designed to create nature books for the southeastern U.S. So far, it has included bird books for North Carolina and Texas.

Birds of the Cayman IslandsAuthor: Patricia Bradley

This field guide was the joint effort of a photographer that had been photographing the birds of the Cayman Islands for years and through all seasons and his friend, the author of the text, a keen bird-watcher. The sparkling photographs were the result of many hours of patient effort. The text was a compilation of the author’s research of the scientific literature and interviews with specialists and university professors. The result: a guide that painted an exciting portrait of the avian life of the islands. Williams Publishing Services handled all aspects of the books design and printing.

The Jurong BirdPark in Singapore has the largest bird collection in the world with over 600 species and extensive facilities for visitors. The BirdPark engaged Williams Publishing Services to produce their anniversary book, including procurement of photographers and images.

The Jurong Bird Park GuidebookAuthor: Winston Williams

WPS produced not only FEATHERED JEWELS, to celebrate the park’s 25th anniversary, but also the BirdPark’s first guidebook. The BirdPark’s Chairman commented that famous nature photographers from all over the world stopped in Singapore to photograph the birds, but the photos produced through WPS were the best he had ever seen. WPS handled all production, editing, and printing of these books and their reprints.

Self-Help

Why Men Cheat and What to Do About ItAuthor: Paul Blanchard

This compact trade paperback book deals with a subject as old as mankind. Conceived, written, edited, and designed under the tutelage of Williams Publishing Group, the book sold well for years through Waldenbooks and Borders, but both bookstores are now, sadly, out of business. The right publisher could put this book back in print.

History

Forgotten HarboursAuthor:

This sumptuous coffee-table book is a limited edition designed as a lavish Christmas gift to the customers of a large, international warehousing and freight company. The company had a long history with sea cargo dating back to the times of the spice trade and the opium wars. The book evokes memories of old Southeast Asia and was a big upgrade over the company’s previous Christmas gift. Williams Publishing Services handled all aspects of production for this book.

Politics

Fixing the INSanityAuthor: Neville Cramer

The author of this book was the highest-ranking field officer of the US Immigration and Naturalization Service. After many years spent in Washington and on the Mexican border, he retired but never stopped thinking about ways to improve the difficult job of securing the nation’s borders. When printed, the author sent a copy of this book to every member of Congress and was gratified to see that some of his innovative ideas found their way into legislation. The officer’s badge was used to create the cover art portraying a broken badge. This publication has been sold by the author at his frequent speaking engagements and also helped to establish his credentials as an expert on immigration policies. Williams Publications Services provided extensive help in all stages of production, from editing to printing.

Fiction

Under the GunAuthor: Timothy Ohr

Williams Publishing Services has also handled the editing, design, cover illustation, and printing of fiction in trade paperback form. Under the Gun is a unique novel of Vietnam, dealing with the well-known and dangerous duty of tunnel searching, but also including little known missions involving “people sniffing” and the use of chemicals to halt troop movements. Although unsung, many people believe that this is the ultimate novel of the Vietnam war. Most of the action is real and biographical of the author.
